About

Join us for a leisurely stroll through Salt River to shop for ingredients and admire the local street art, followed by cooking a Cape Malay meal from scratch!

Our Cape Malay/Creole cooking class and shopping tour in Salt River lasts approximately 3 to 4 hours and requires no prior cooking experience, just a keen interest in learning about the culinary heritage of the Cape Malay/Creole people.

The level of involvement in cooking is flexible, depending on how much time you have and how engaged you’d like to be. Together, we can prepare everything from scratch for a fully hands-on experience or have you participate in key aspects of the preparation. By default, guests will roll out rotis, prepare the Onion and Tomato Sambal, and learn about the history of the spice and slave trade in South Africa.

While cooking, you’ll also have the opportunity to learn about the unique socio-cultural identity of the Cape Muslim community. This Creole community is one of the most diverse in the world. After preparing the dishes, you’ll share the meal with chefs from the Salt River/Woodstock community  This is the ideal activity for food and history enthusiasts seeking an authentic insight into the culinary culture of the Cape Malay/Creole people.
