Cape Malay & Creole Cooking Experience
A Culinary Storytelling Experience Through Salt River & Woodstock
Begin with a walking tour through Salt River, where we shop for ingredients at small local businesses while exploring the layered cultural heritage of one of Cape Town’s most multicultural neighbourhoods. Afterwards, join us at our home in Woodstock to prepare and share a three-course Cape Malay and Creole meal while learning about the history of spices, migration and the communities that shaped the Cape’s rich culinary identity.
This experience combines food, storytelling, history and hospitality in an intimate and welcoming setting.
About the Experience
Our Cape Malay and Creole Cooking Experience lasts approximately 3.5 hours and requires no prior cooking experience, only curiosity and an interest in food, culture and history.
The level of involvement in cooking is flexible depending on how hands-on you would like the experience to be. Guests typically participate in key elements of the preparation process such as rolling rotis, preparing sambals and learning about the spices used throughout Cape Malay cuisine.
While cooking together, we also explore the culinary identity and cultural history of Cape Malay and Creole communities in South Africa, including the influences of migration, trade and colonial history on the Cape’s food culture.
After preparing the dishes, we gather around the table to share the meal together with members of the Salt River and Woodstock community.
