Frequently Asked Questions
Welcome to our FAQ page Here you’ll find answers to common questions about our food tours and experiences. If your question isn’t listed here, please get in touch. We’re happy to help.
Yes. Our group sizes are small and spots are limited to 12, so we recommend booking early to secure your preferred date. Private tours require advance notice to coordinate guides and hosts.
Yes. Please email us at least 48 hours before your scheduled tour and we will do our best to reschedule you.
You may cancel or reschedule up to 14 days before your experience for a full refund or exchange. If you need to cancel or reschedule between 14 days and 48 hours before the experience, we can offer a date change or credit voucher. We cannot refund or reschedule any bookings within 48 hours, as preparations for your experience will have already begun.
All tours are offered in English. A German-speaking guide may be available on request. French translation can sometimes be arranged at an additional cost. Please email us to check availability.
Yes, we do our best to accommodate dietary needs. Please let us know in advance by email. Our experiences are suitable for vegetarians, vegans and pescatarians. We visit informal community kitchens, not formal restaurants, so gluten-free substitutes are not available. However, gluten is minimal in most dishes and can usually be avoided. If you are gluten intolerant, we recommend simply skipping the bread.
We cannot guarantee allergen-free food or avoid cross-contamination. For this reason, the experience is not suitable for people with severe or life-threatening allergies.
Please wear comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate clothing. A cardigan or windbreaker is advisable as the weather in Cape Town can change suddenly. Depending on the forecast, consider bringing an umbrella, sunscreen or a hat. We provide water on the tour, but you’re welcome to bring your own bottle.
Please wear modest, simple clothing and avoid visible jewellery. Many of our stops are Muslim-owned, and dressing respectfully is appreciated.
Yes. People of all ages are welcome. If you are travelling with children under 12, we recommend booking a private tour for more flexibility with timing and pace. Please email us to discuss what might suit your family best.
Yes. Older adults and people with disabilities or mobility needs are welcome. We suggest emailing us in advance to help us plan for your comfort.
If you are concerned about keeping up with the group pace (around 3 kilometers over 3 hours), we can offer a private tour at no extra cost, subject to guide availability. Caregivers or assistants may join for free.
Please note: due to limited accessibility in the inner city, we are unfortunately not able to accommodate wheelchairs at this time. We hope this changes in the future.
We operate in areas with regular foot traffic, CCTV, and visible police or security presence. Serious crime is rare, but petty theft can happen.
We ask guests to stay with the guide, follow instructions and avoid wearing visible jewellery. For added safety, we now have two guides on every tour.
We have experience hosting VIP guests and can arrange private security upon request. Please email us for more information.
No alcohol is served on our experiences. Most of the places we visit are halal, and we kindly ask that you do not bring your own alcohol.
Yes, but please do so with care.
Do not photograph other guests, vendors or members of the public without permission. We are not responsible for loss or damage to your camera or phone, so bring electronics at your own risk.
You are welcome to take pictures along the way, but please stay with the group and avoid causing delays. Your guide will be happy to assist if you let them know.
Our experiences move continuously, and the group stays together for safety. Please keep this in mind if you want to stop and shop during the tour.
If shopping is a priority, we recommend booking a private experience so we can build in time to browse for spices, art, fabric or other items.
This is not just a food tour. While you’ll taste a variety of traditional and street foods, the experience also explores the stories, history and culture behind the food.
We speak openly about the legacy of colonialism and apartheid, the role of food in identity and resilience, and how African and diaspora communities are shaping Cape Town’s inner-city food landscape today.
You’ll learn about space, gentrification, migration and community from the perspective of local food entrepreneurs, many of whom work in informal or marginalised contexts. The tour is informative, moving and grounded in real stories.
Yes. We offer both private and custom experiences. Please email us to start the conversation.
We host groups from 1 to 12 max. If group size matters to you, please email us to inquire or book a private tour.
Our tours are guided by trained local guides, sometimes accompanied by trainees or assistants. Please check out our Meet the Team section. It’s not possible to choose your guide, but you may email us to inquire if you must.
